I just discovered something about squirrels and London cab drivers that’s kind of crazy. 

Turns out they share a common biological trait.

(No, I didn’t see this on the cover of the National Inquirer.  I read about it in Scientific American.) 

The trait they share is they both have a large hippocampus. 

How can this be?

Well, squirrels are born that way.  But London cabbies develop their hippocampus while studying to get their license.  

Day after day, over the course of 3-4 years, aspiring cabbies drive around London on a moped.  They’re working on memorizing where the city’s 25,000 streets are, which direction the one-way streets go, and the fastest ways to get to key locations.  

Those are the things they’ll be tested on.  (And only 50% of people who take the test pass.)

As for squirrels, they’re born with a large hippocampus because they have to remember where they hid their acorns. (I always wondered if they really went back and found them!)

As you may know, the hippocampus plays an important role in things like memory, learning, and spatial navigation.  It helps our brain create “mental maps” that we can refer back to.  This is part of our innate survival instinct. 

Why This Is Important For Your Health Coaching Business

When we have mental maps in place, we feel more secure.  Maps help us feel more confident that we’ll get from where we are now to where we want to be.

It’s the same for the people who are considering working with you.  

If you can show them you have a plan mapped out that’s going to get them from where they are now to where they want to be, they’ll feel more confident that you can help them get results.

I call this map your Signature System.  Unfortunately, many health coaches don’t have one.  Or they go about creating their Signature System the wrong way.  

One of the mistakes I often see coaches make is they use the steps of their program to create it.  But your Signature System is NOT the same thing as your program.  

A good Signature System is a transformative marketing message.  When it’s done right, it makes people excited to work with you.
